Goodbye

Dear Parents:                                                                                              September 1st, 2017

I recently was at a going away party for a former colleague of Cabrini that I remained close with after he retired.  He had sold his house and was moving to sunny Florida.  I had learned a great deal from him when I worked with him and was sad that it may be a very long time till the next time I see him.  He like so many of us come to these forks in the roads where we have to decide are we going to be afraid and let fear hold us back or are we going to take a leap of faith?  That can be a scary thing; I know he was anxious about this move, but excited all the same.  Believe me I know that feeling of your stomach in knots and trouble sleeping because of not knowing what the future may bring.  The uncertainly of it all can be very stressful, but we need to trust the process.  God has a plan.

I have been a teacher for fifteen years and would be embarking on my tenth year here at Cabrini.  In that time I have made what I hope will be some long lasting friendships.  I truly love many of you and thank you for being so supportive and caring to me in my tenure.  Cabrini has the best parents.  However, as the flow of information at Cabrini moves very fast you may already know that I have decided with a very heavy heart, much soul searching and counsel that it is time to move on.  I have accepted a new position at Bryant Middle School in Dearborn as their new 6th grade science/social studies teacher.  I am basically starting immediately and have already hit the floor running as their first day of school is Tuesday.  I am very excited about this new opportunity and looking forward to a fresh start, but my soul hurts because I couldn’t say goodbye to your children the way I wanted.  Please hold them, pray with them and tell them my decision has nothing to do with them.  My wife and I do not have children and anyone that knows me that when I talk about “my kids” I am referring to my students.  I don’t want them to think I am abandoning them.  I know that they are in more than capable hands and will be just fine, but I can’t help, but feeling guilty.  I ensure you I did not come to this decision easily, but I need more.  Honestly, I have to consider what is in the best interest for me and my family.  I need a chance to apply my education with a real opportunity to advance my career which is not possible for me at Cabrini.  I became a teacher because I honestly feel there is no better or rewarding profession.  I am looking forward to what this new journey will bring and understand all the positive things at Cabrini I am giving up; so please pray for me because I am nervous.  Also, never hesitate to reach out and contact me.  Good luck to you and all your future endeavors that God puts in front of you.  I will miss you all very much and wish you only the best.

Sincerely Yours:

Mr. Kerr

First Week of School

The first days of school have been a success; very few issues.  I have been going over procedure and policy for the last few days with my students and will continue too.  I showed my award winning First Day of School DVD today.  Ask your children… its ground breaking; super awesome special effects.  I will also be giving out text books tomorrow in ALL classes and I expect them to be covered as soon as possible.  Today and tomorrow we have be working making sure that ALL students that have a cell phone sign up for my Remind 101 app.  FYI If you have already received a text message from me than you have already signed up for this.  These tend to go out weekly and are an important tool in communication.  I will have my syllabus on Plus Portals before Parent Teacher Orientation which is next Wednesday.  Let’s have a wonderful year and if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.  Thank you.

August 15th, 2017

The first day of school is fast approaching… unbelievable it is Monday the 21st; that is also a noon dismissal.  I really do hope everyone had a restful yet wonderful and fun summer.  I was very busy myself.
I will be doing much of the same I have done in previous years in regards to the science experiments, Remind 101 app, this blog and whatnot.  However, I do ask that ALL students do have a thin 3 hole science binder this year as we are going to create personal portfolios.  I have done this before, but it has been awhile.  Also, be prepared to have students bring in their cell phones (if they have them… most do) on the second day of school to sign up for the Remind 101 app in the Lab.  I am looking forward to what the new school year brings and am very excited.  FYI I will be sending a syllabus home with students that first week as well.  By all means if you have any questions please e-mail me it is on Plus Portals and on my syllabus and never hesitate to set up a conference if so desired; it’s important to keep the lines of communication open.

Let’s have a great year… GO MONARCHS!  Oh, and 18 more days to Michigan football.  GO BLUE!

July 11th, 2017

I hope everyone has been having an awesome summer so far and doing lots of fun things.  I spent a week upnorth for the 4th and visited Mackinaw Island for a day trip.  Hopefully along with vacations and being at the pool, you are doing a bit of reading too.  It’s hard to believe that school starts next month… Yikes!  Well, everyone be safe and I look forward to the new school year.

Maybe, I will see a few of your parent’s downtown in the D for one of the greatest bands of all-time tomorrow! \m/

Last Week of School

It is the last week of school… 10:00 AM dismissal tomorrow.  Yeah!  It seems just a short time ago the school year had begun as the weeks and months went by we got closer to yet another June.  This was my tenth year at Cabrini and even though there were many ups there were some downs too.  I truly do love working here at Cabrini and am very blessed to have such a wonderful support system not only with my peers, but parents as well.  Thank you for being so proactive and working with us.  I am looking forward to next year and what new exciting challenges that brings.  There will be more changes I am sure.  I already have new creative ideas buzzing around in my head to make for a positive school year in the fall.  By the way the first day is Monday August 21st… Please let’s all have a wonderful and safe summer.  Relax.  I will see you at the festival this weekend and perhaps even some of you at any of the summer concerts I have planned.  I will be at Tool tomorrow at DTE, RATT at the Uncle Sam Jam in early July, Metallica on July 12th at Comerica, Tom Petty, KoRn/Stone Sour at the end of July and finally Sammy Hagar in September.
